A Cottage-Style German Kitchen in Saddleworth, Manchester
When this client decided to update their kitchen in Greenfield, Saddleworth, the existing layout already worked reasonably well but visually the space never felt like “them”. Installed by the original property developer, the kitchen lacked personality and character, and the tall units felt imposing as soon as you entered the room.
The homeowners really wanted to move away from the standard developer finish and create something softer, warmer and more in keeping with a traditional cottage-style aesthetic, while still benefiting from the quality and functionality of a modern German kitchen.
Blending Traditional Character with Modern Living
Located near Uppermill, Dobcross, Delph and the Peak District National Park, this Saddleworth kitchen project focused on reshaping the atmosphere of the room rather than completely reinventing the layout.
The homeowners explored several possibilities during the design process, including removing an under-stairs cupboard to make the room feel larger. Using our 3D CAD software allowed them to visualise multiple options before deciding on the final layout, giving them confidence that the design worked perfectly for both the space and their lifestyle. A peninsula layout ultimately provided the ideal balance between openness and practicality, creating a more sociable kitchen without compromising valuable storage.
A Softer Take on Contemporary German Design
For this project, the homeowners wanted to go with the beautiful and more traditional Nobilia Sylt range in an elegant Ivory finish. Unlike some of the more minimalist modern kitchens, this design leans into classic cottage-inspired detailing, including decorative pilasters, cornicing and pelmets that give the space a much more handcrafted and timeless feel.
The cabinetry is paired with 20mm NSQ Smokey Marble quartz worktops and matching splashbacks, bringing subtle movement and texture into the design. The delicate veining within the quartz complements both the ivory furniture and the darker accents throughout the room without overpowering the space.
Practical Features Hidden Within a Traditional Design
Although the kitchen has a classic appearance, it still incorporates many of the clever storage solutions expected from a premium German kitchen.
A Lemans corner unit and twin corner carousel systems help make awkward corner spaces fully accessible, maximising storage while keeping everything easy to reach. Ambient E-motion lighting also introduces a warm glow across the worktops during the evening, helping the kitchen feel cosy and inviting.
The peninsula breakfast bar has become one of the homeowners’ favourite features, creating a relaxed place for informal dining or somewhere to sit and chat while meals are being prepared.
Carefully Chosen Finishing Details
To complete the design, the homeowners sourced their own specialist range cooker, giving the kitchen a true focal point and adding to the traditional feel of the room.
Additional finishing details include:
- Schock Quadro black undermount sink
- Rodez gunmetal cottage-style tap
- Smokey Marble quartz worktops and splashbacks
- Decorative traditional cabinetry detailing
- Integrated ambient lighting
Together, these features create a kitchen that feels unique, welcoming and full of character.
