When the homeowners began planning their new-build home in High Flatts, they already knew exactly what they wanted from their kitchen. Having previously owned a high-quality German kitchen, they weren’t looking to solve existing problems or compromise on quality. Instead, they wanted a modern, highly functional kitchen that would complement their open-plan living space while making everyday cooking as effortless as possible.

A key requirement was ensuring the layout remained fully accessible for their daughter’s wheelchair, with generous circulation space throughout the room and features designed to support the whole family. The result is a striking contemporary kitchen that combines sleek design, intelligent storage and carefully considered accessibility.

Designing a Kitchen Around Open-Plan Living

Located close to Holmfirth, the Holme Valley and the Peak District National Park, this Huddersfield kitchen project was designed as the centrepiece of a large open-plan living and dining space.

The layout centres around a spacious island which creates natural zones for preparation, cooking and serving without interrupting the flow of the room. Crucially, the design also ensures there is clear access around all sides of the island, making movement through the space easy and comfortable for every member of the family.

A generous breakfast bar provides a relaxed space for informal dining while also ensuring the kitchen remains a social environment where family and guests can gather throughout the day.

A Bold Combination of Texture & Contemporary Design

The kitchen combines cabinetry from the Nobilia Senso and Riva ranges, creating a sophisticated mix of textures and finishes.

Matte black cabinetry forms the foundation of the design, delivering a sleek and contemporary aesthetic that complements the architecture of the new-build home. To introduce contrast and visual interest, Concrete Terra bridging units were incorporated above the sink area and continued through to the substantial 100mm-thick breakfast bar.

Paired with Dekton Sirius worktops and matching splashbacks, the overall look feels bold, modern and exceptionally refined. The combination of dark cabinetry and concrete-effect detailing creates a kitchen with real presence while remaining timeless and practical.

Intelligent Storage Designed Around Everyday Cooking

Functionality played a major role throughout the design process, particularly as the homeowners cook from fresh every day.

A tall pull-out larder keeps dry ingredients organised and easy to access, while extensive drawer storage throughout the island ensures utensils, cookware and crockery can be stored exactly where they are needed.

The island itself has been carefully planned around dedicated preparation, cooking and serving zones. Cutlery is stored beneath the preparation area, pans and cooking utensils are positioned beneath the Bora hob, while deep drawers beneath the serving area provide convenient storage for plates and bowls

Alongside the carefully planned layout, the homeowners selected a range of premium appliances and upgrades designed to enhance everyday life.

E-motion lighting introduces a soft ambient glow throughout the room, while integrated waste separation keeps recycling and household waste neatly hidden away.
