A Contemporary Open-Plan Kitchen for a New Build Home in Rotherham
When this client began building his new home in Scholes, Rotherham, he wanted a kitchen that would feel completely integrated into the wider living space rather than simply functioning as a separate room. As a builder himself, he already understood the importance of good planning and wanted to work with a kitchen company that could contribute creative ideas while coordinating smoothly alongside the wider build programme.
After working with us, the result is a beautifully balanced open-plan kitchen that combines bold contemporary finishes with carefully considered practicality.
Designing a Kitchen Around Open-Plan Living
Located close to Wentworth Woodhouse, Clifton Park and Meadowhall, this Rotherham kitchen project was designed specifically to complement a large open-plan living and dining area.
The layout centres around a spacious island that naturally defines the kitchen zone without interrupting the openness of the room. By positioning preparation, cooking and serving areas around the island, movement throughout the space feels intuitive and effortless — particularly when entertaining guests or spending time with family.
A matching dining table and sideboard continue the same material palette into the dining area, helping the entire room feel cohesive and connected.
A Striking Combination of Colour & Texture
The new kitchen features cabinets from the Nobilia Easytouch and Riva ranges in stunning Fjord Blue and Walnut finishes. The deep blue cabinetry adds lots of character and richness to the room, while the walnut detailing adds warmth and texture throughout the design. Paired with 20mm NSQ Smokey Marble quartz worktops and matching splashbacks, the overall look feels sleek, sophisticated and perfectly suited to modern open-plan living.
Glass display units built into the sideboard area add another layer of texture and visual interest, especially when illuminated in the evening with integrated E-motion lighting.
Practical Storage Without Compromising Style
Although the kitchen has a strong design focus, functionality was just as important throughout the planning process. A pull-out larder keeps dry storage organised and easy to access, eliminating the need to crouch down into lower cupboards, while three large one-metre-wide drawers within the island create dedicated storage zones exactly where they are needed most.
Integrated waste separation also makes recycling simple and keeps clutter hidden away, helping preserve the clean aesthetic of the kitchen.
Ambient lighting beneath the wall units and worktops was included not only for practicality but also to soften the atmosphere within the open-plan room during the evenings.

- Siemens IQ700 ovens with matching full-height microwave
- Siemens IQ500 venting hob
- Quooker Fusion round tap in stainless steel
