A Bright Contemporary Kitchen Transformation in Honley, Huddersfield

When the homeowners decided to update their kitchen in Honley, they weren’t replacing a poor-quality kitchen. In fact, the existing kitchen was already a well-made German installation. However, the design felt dated, the colour palette no longer suited their tastes and several aspects of the layout weren’t working as effectively as they could.

Their goal was to create a lighter, brighter space that worked better with the home’s open-plan layout while retaining the island-centred design they enjoyed. By carefully rethinking the layout and introducing contemporary finishes, we transformed the kitchen into a space that feels modern, functional and perfectly suited to everyday family life.

Creating a Lighter & More Practical Layout

Located close to Holmfirth, Holme Moss and the Peak District National Park, this Honley kitchen project focused on improving both the flow and usability of the room.

One of the biggest changes involved removing a partition wall between the kitchen and utility room. This simple alteration allowed significantly more natural light to flow through the space, instantly making the kitchen feel larger and more open.

The homeowners also wanted to relocate the sink away from the centre of the room. In the previous design, the sink was positioned on a distinctive Y-shaped island, meaning washing up often became the focal point of the kitchen. By moving the sink to a position beneath the window, the island could instead become a dedicated preparation and cooking space centred around a Bosch induction hob.

The result is a layout that feels cleaner, brighter and much better suited to modern open-plan living.

A Contemporary Design That Complements a Character Home

The new kitchen features Nobilia Laser cabinetry in Alpine White, creating a crisp and contemporary aesthetic that reflects the light throughout the room.

Paired with 20mm Smokey Marble quartz worktops, the design feels modern and elegant without overwhelming the character of the property. The clean handleless cabinetry sits in striking contrast to the homeowners’ existing Aga, creating an interesting blend of traditional and contemporary elements.

This balance between old and new gives the kitchen a distinctive personality while ensuring it remains sympathetic to the wider home.

Practical Features Designed Around Everyday Living

Although aesthetics were important, functionality remained at the heart of the design.

The new island layout creates generous circulation space throughout the room, allowing multiple people to move around comfortably even when cooking is underway. Integrated internal bins help maintain the clean appearance of the kitchen by removing the need for a freestanding bin, while carefully positioned appliances improve day-to-day usability.

The homeowners also wanted the flexibility of using their Aga during colder months while having a more practical alternative during the summer. The addition of a Bosch Series 4 oven alongside the existing Aga provides exactly that balance.

Lighting played an important role throughout the project due to the limited natural light available before the renovation.

Integrated E-motion lighting helps create a warm ambient glow throughout the space, ensuring the kitchen remains inviting throughout the day and into the evening.
